When to Say When

When your best intentions for someone's opportunities are not met with the same excitement as yours, you immediately start to back off.  I have been contacted by several companies wanting advice and direction into the governmental work arena.  We meet and summarize their goals and submit a plan.  Much to my surprise, they push back.  Their answer is "we absolutely cannot do that". It becomes clear that their wants and needs are one thing and their willingness to try something new is another.
To do or be something you have never done or been, is uncomfortable.  You must be committed and solid in your reasons why you want to go in this direction.  You will be uncomfortable for a short time.  Your journey will challenge your knowledge and spirit.  Just hang in there!  Your faith in the reward for the journey through this discomfort can be spectacular.

Federal Year End

As the current federal fiscal year is coming to a close, we look to projects that are bidding in August and September to fill up our next year backlog.  There are so many factors that are evaluated in making the decision to award a project or postpone a project.  We all are at the mercy of those factors.  Some have funds that must be spent on projects by the end of September or lost forever, and some proposals are just for the opportunity to narrow down the competition by qualifying for a IDIQ or MACC contract for example.  These types of contracts limit the amount of contractors that are allowed to bid on projects over a specific period of time with a specific amount of money to be used.  These last 2 months are always crammed  with RFP's and intense.  You can make or break your next year and the next 5 years if you do not do well.  Good luck to us all.

Military Contracting

The climate for the last 2 years in military contracting has left all who have been involved with this process dangling.  The previous process had RFP's requiring proposals, evaluation against governmental guidelines and budget and then award.  September is the fiscal year end for the military contracting services.  The government would issue contracts and the construction process would begin.  For the last2 years the government has not issued awards consistently.  There are hundreds of projects that are awaiting award.  The contractors that have been told they have the project jump into action getting staff and design teams together waiting for the LOI (Letter of Intent) with the official word on paper.  Many have expanded their staff only to have to contract it after 3 to 6 months of waiting for the "official " word.  This definitely has to do with the budget cuts and the politics of election.  Thank GOD this is the election year.  There may be an end to the waiting, then again there may not be.

It is a different channel of thought to make the customer's wants and desires your first priority.  I have found it to be the easiest way to function.  If you don't value the needs of your customer over yours and try to meet his needs with your services, he will find someone who will.  It also narrows your approach for new clients or customers.  Continually defining the term "the customer is always right" needs to be the fabric of the company.  If the client or customer does not pay for your services you cannot be in business.  What you believe, your spouse believes, your family believes, your staff believes is all irrelevant.  It is only what the client or customer believes and is willing to pay for that matters.  Kissing the ground they walk on and thanking them for doing business with you and not someone else defines your willingness to adapt this different channel of thought .

No Fun Playing it "Safe"

There are always times when you are willing to take risks.  Measured and calculated.  Then there are times when you make a snap judgement and just let it go.  The time you choose to go when you have calculated the risks often seem to be anti climactic. You anticipate you have thought of every possible mishap and you have.  There in lies the let down.  It possibly was more fun defending against the mishap than taking the calculated risk.  The time you jump to snap judgement is more scary.  The unknown and unthoughtful action of which nothing has been considered.  You have to rely on your instincts and confidence that no matter what gets thrown at you, you can overcome it.  Being "Safe" and pre-planning turns out to have less thrills.  You have heard the saying "No risk no reward", when it comes to spontaneity, there are no better thrills.  You learn and grow so much by sticking your neck out once in awhile to test yourself and your resilience.  Have some fun!

Today is one of those days when you have too much to do and are still trying to get it all done.  You try and get up in the middle of the night and get as far ahead of the day as you can before anyone else gets up.  You can only beat the day on that end.  Once everyone else it up, you have interruptions you do not control.  Focus becomes the hardest to accomplish.  Today will go by and whatever gets done, gets done.  No matter how hard we try.

In taking the time to add my thoughts here on this space I reflect first on what I intend on conveying.  Most of the time the title is the last thing to do.  Blogging is an unnatural daily event that I would like to do and get better at.  Practice makes perfect.  Or, better yet, Perfect practice makes perfect.  So here we go!

This recent week I discovered yet again the powerful use of the word "No".  I have listened to many recordings stating it is powerful knowing what you do not what to do.  We set our goals for this new venture and got an offer that was outside the model we have intended to follow.  We started to use our energy and figure out how to make it work and then we asked ourselves if it fit the model we have for the future.  The answer was no.  We stopped immediately.  We then had a discussion with our good friend who had offered to let us do a project for him and explained why we did not want to do what he was going to allow us to do.  Because we were great friends he understood.  He also said he was offering this because he wanted to help us.  Now he understands that staying focused on the direction we want to go is important to us.  We appreciate each other more for having gone through this together.  We now know that our friend is willing to help us whenever asked.  That is comforting.
